Paxi VacationTravel to Paxi!Situated about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Corfu, this tiny island of only 25 square kilometers (9.6 sq. miles) looks more like a forest growing out of the sea, rather than an island! There are more than 300,000 olive trees covering its tiny surface, which accounts for its outstanding and well-known olive oil. Also known as Paxoi and Paxos, the island’s charming capital and main port is called Gaios, situated on the southeast coast. From here, there is a main road running to the north of the island to the small village and port of Lakkas. The island is a delight for walkers, as it is fairly flat and measures only about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in width and 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in length; the east coast has lots of pretty coves, while the west coast is more rugged and rocky, with sheer cliffs rising to about 200 meters(600 ft). It is on the west coast that you will find most of the sea caves, accessed only by caique, which are a delight to explore.During the summer months, it is possible to travel by caique to the small island south of Paxi called Antipaxi (or Antipaxos). The island has superb sandy beaches, and instead of olive groves, Antipaxi cultivates red and white grapes that produce excellent wines.
