Grevena Venetikos River VacationTravel to Grevena! The Prefecture of Grevena lies in the western part of Macedonia, extends to an area of 2291 square kilometers (884.5 square miles), and is entirely mountainous, as it occupies a large part of the Pindos Mountain Range: Mt. Bouzio (2239 meters / 6717 feet) is the highest peak in Grevena. The Aliakmonas River comes in from the neighboring Kozani Prefecture for a short visit, before it returns to it, enriched by the water of the Venetikos and Grevenitikos Rivers.Because of its location, Grevena Prefecture is one of the coldest ones in Greece, offering cool summers. The local economy is based on farming, small animal husbandry, and forestry. The area is not a major attraction for tourism, although there are therapeutic springs in Kavasila and a lot of very beautiful places for Nature lovers. Trekking, mountain biking, climbing, and skiing offer a wide range of choices year-round.There are also two sites of major importance: Knide (Kremastos) Neolithic settlement and the Monastery of Panaghia Zavorda. The former is dated to the end of the Early Neolithic period (6500-5800 B.C.) and the beginning of the Late Neolithic period (4800-4500 B.C.). Excavations have brought to light the remains of a mattle-and-daub structure, along with pottery and a quantity of small objects (figurines, tools, etc.). The excavation trenches have been fenced in and roofed over and can be visited by the public. The latter, on Mt. Kallistraton, by the river Aliakmon, was founded in the beginning of the 16th century by Osios Nikanor from Thessaloniki. The buildings are organized around a central courtyard, following the pattern of the monasteries on Mount Athos. In the center of the courtyard is the catholicon, a triconch church of the athonite type, richly decorated with wall paintings, dated to the 16th and 19th centuries. The founder's tomb is preserved on the south side of the church.
